JACQUELINE (Jac) GARES is a New York-based filmmaker. FREE CeCe! (available now on iTunes) is the documentary feature film she directed and co-produced with Laverne Cox. The film premiered on June 2, 2016 at the Los Angeles Film Festival and won the Audience Award at Black Star Film Festival. Educators have made this film part of their curriculum all over the world which was a goal of making the film.
For five years, Jac served as producer and supervising producer of IN THE LIFE on public television, garnering awards from NLGJA, GLAAD, and Webbys. She produced a segment for the show on bullying which was used by the Department of Education under the Obama Administration.
She produced commercially for the History Channel, Food Network, and USA Networks. Previously, she worked with PBS's premiere non-fiction film showcase, P.O.V./The American Documentary. When Jac left P.O.V. she made UNRAVELED, a documentary, about genetic testing and Alzheimer’s Disease. UNRAVELED, won a Freddie Award in 2008 and was purchased by a major pharmaceutical company to educate folks on the disease.
Her short film REMNANT won a TELLY Award in 1999. Gares has a BA in English Literature from Rutgers University and an MA in Media Studies from The New School.
